While it is accepted that a SETC does not have the capacity or the height of a tower crane for larger projects, tower cranes can be seen on smaller projects where a SETC might suffice. In such cases advantages of using a SETC might be:
- A Mantis SETC is pedestrian remote control operated so in many instances eliminates the need for a slinger/banksman.
- This also means that the operator is available for other work when not occupied with crane duties.
- The delivery, erection, dismantling/collection costs of a Mantis SETC are much lower than those of a tower crane.
- On low rise sites where the density of construction is high it can be more practical and cost effective to employ two or more Mantis SETC’s than one large tower crane. This will result in increased hook time leading to improved productivity and shorter project time.
- In built up areas where free slew and over sailing of adjacent properties is an issue it may be possible to reduce the radius of the jib by folding it when the crane is out of service or not in operation.
- The use of remote control eliminates the need for an operator to climb the crane on a daily basis.
