When most people think of a tower crane they envisage a structure combining a vertical mast or tower with a horizontal jib. This type of crane has been seen on building sites for many years and has proven to be a very efficient tool for moving materials around a development. The fact that this conventional design needs to be assembled and erected on site using a mobile crane usually means that the costs involved can only be justified on larger projects.
A Self Erecting Tower Crane is a tower crane which arrives on site ready assembled but folded. When electric power is connected to the machine it can be erected by means of its inbuilt hydraulics and ropes. This greatly reduces both the time taken to mobilise and the associated costs with mobilisation taking place within a few hours.
With self erecting cranes normally being operated through radio remote control, this leaves the operator free to move around the site and in some instances the operator can act as slinger, again making the use of the equipment more versatile and cost effective.
